How do we explain recent increase in average magnitude of earthquakes?

Earthquakes not located along the same fault line can be considered as random events in both frequency and magnitude. Any statistically random distribution, by definition, includes clumping. In other words, a certain amount of clumping (or departures from the average) is characteristic of a random distribution. What you seem to be expecting is a uniform distribution, which is quite rare in nature.
